Recruiting for a Business: Glasgow Guarantee

The Glasgow Guarantee is an initiative delivered by Glasgow City Council to provide employment opportunities and support local businesses to grow thereby increasing the prosperity of the Glasgow City economy.

The Glasgow Guarantee offers support to:

  • all young people aged 16-24 to help them access training, an apprenticeship or employment
  • workless young adults aged 20-29
  • workless adults aged 50 years plus
  • Armed Forces Veterans
  •  Unemployed graduates

The Glasgow Guarantee will offer your business:

  • help with the wage costs of recruiting a young person together with financial assistance towards the training element
  • help to recruit workless young adults aged 20-29; 50 years plus; Armed Forces Veterans and unemployed graduates who have graduated within the previous 12 months
  • access to wide pool of candidates registered with the Glasgow Guarantee
  • free assistance to help you identify a suitable candidate to meet your business needs.

To be eligible for support, your business must:

  • be based within the Glasgow City Council boundary;
  • employ less than 250 people

Further, the job you offer must:

  • pay a minimum of £4 per hour for young people under 20 years old;
  • pay the current Glasgow living wage rate of £7.85 per hour for over 20 year olds;
  • pay a minimum wage of £16,000 or £8.79 per hour for recent graduates (wage subsidy of 50% which is capped at £8,000);
  • be new and additional to your business;
  • be a minimum of 25 hours per week to a maximum of 40 hours per week
  • provide the employee with the same contract of employment as all other employees

Glasgow Guarantee – For Individuals 

The £50million Glasgow Guarantee, a Legacy of the Commonwealth Games offers support for training, work, modern apprenticeships and job opportunities for Glasgow people. Since the summer of 2009, almost 6000 Glaswegians between the ages of 16-24 have progressed into employment, apprenticeships or training through a number of initiatives.

Opportunities are available across a range of sectors and job types and many will include additional training such as working towards a Vocational Qualification specific to the employing business.
You can access these opportunities, if you are:

Under 20 years

  • Workless young people who are not in full time education, training or employment
  • Eligible from day 1 unemployed
  • Open to school leavers or those thinking of leaving school
  • Over 20 years
  • Workless adults aged 20-29
  • Workless adults aged 50+
  • Workless Armed Forces Veterans
  • Unemployed Graduates who have graduated within the previous 12 months
  • Underemployed Graduates who have graduated within the previous 12 months

You must also be a Glasgow resident and legally entitled to work in the UK.
